fourth barrier

Whilst everybody has snow, Orkney has glorious sunshine.

Still cold though.

Went to the beach at the fourth Churchill Barrier today which connects South Ronaldsay and Burray.

my exhibition space

We finally finished my little gallery space this month. None of us thought the old framing room would scrub up so well!

I even have a plant.

If you'd like to see all the renovating and building we've done over the past year, check our the photo albums on the Hoxa Tapestry Gallery facebook page.

home scars

My most recent series of paintings, 12.7cm (5 inch) square each, oil on board.

 detail: central piece

These were based on photographs I took at the Sands O' Wright beach of limpet rings left on the rocks. Their suction marks are referred to as home scars as they return to the same spot before the tide ebbs. Each ring is unique to a limpet, like a fingerprint.

time and movement

A series of 30.5cm (1ft) square paintings. Acrylic and pencil on canvas.

rock reflecting island rhythm

91.5 x 183cm (3ft x 6ft) mixed media painting: emulsion, gloss, oil, pencil and sand on canvas.

the Dam of Hoxa

60cm square mixed media painting: oil, sand and clear gloss varnish on canvas.

I've been wanting to use gloss varnish in a heavily poured way for years and I'm delighted I've finally found an idea to try it out on. It adds an interesting sense of depth to the piece.

new beginnings

I've been meaning to start this blog since January. New year, new beginnings etc.

Let's pretend March is the new January.
